Sorghum Cluster

The Sorghum Cluster Initiative Background

The sorghum industry in South Africa is facing huge challenges and has seen production and consumption decreased dramatically over the past few decades. However, sorghum remains an important crop for South Africa as well as the broader region due to its high nutritional value and tolerance to drought conditions. Due to the importance of the crop for food and nutrition security for the future, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) launched a feasibility study to establish market opportunities for sorghum in South Africa. The study not only highlighted the major challenges the industry is currently faced with but also identified potential recommendations that could be implemented for the survival of the industry.
